Where Is The OnStar Module Located?

Onstar is a service that aims to help vehicle owners in various situations and emergencies. The operating system can track your car and connect to it whenever you require assistance.
Although the benefits of Onstar are plenty, some of you might want to disconnect from the system for personal reasons. If that is the case for you, you'll need to know how to locate the Onstar module installed in your vehicle's hardware. But doing this can be difficult if you don't know where to look.
Where Can I Find The Onstar Module?
The Onstar module can be typically found securely mounted on the back of your car's rear wheels. This could be either the left or right rear wheel; it differentiates from car to car, so you'll have to check it yourself to be sure.
Search The Car Trunk
You first need to open the car's trunk to find the Onstar module in your car. Then, simply lift the trunk liner to reveal what's underneath.
Note that the trunk liner is not clamped shut by any screws, bolts, or nuts, so lifting it should not be an issue.
Lift The Spare Tire
Most cars typically have a spare tire kept under the liner, so it's safe to assume it's the same for your car. You won't need the spare tire at the moment, so just lift it up and keep it aside for now.
Some cars have the spare tire attached to the trunk with a nut at the center to hold it. If that is the case, use a screwdriver to remove the nut by turning it anti-clockwise, then remove the tire.
Take Out The Sill Plate
Looking inside the trunk, you'll notice screws bolted on each of the four corners. This is so the sill plate can be held in place without automatically coming off. Remove the four screws to loosen the sill plate and lift it from the trunk.
Some vehicles have a cargo net in the trunk, secured by four screws. If that's the case, only remove these four screws to unlock the net, then remove them along with the sill plate.
Take Off The Right Side Panel
Locate the shell panel on the trunk's side and peel it off to reveal what's on the inside. The Onstar module will be tucked underneath the trunk's shell panel and will appear as a silver-colored metal box. Make sure you confirm the logo that says 'Onstar'!
Is The Onstar Module Always In The Trunk?
Not quite. While most vehicles do store the module inside the trunk, others have it behind the glove compartment. Meanwhile, large trucks typically store the module underneath a broad plastic panel beneath the stereo systems. This panel is generally inside the dashboard or behind the glove compartment.
You can remove the glove box by opening the door and taking out any cords or tabs holding it in place. Then, push the walls of the glove box to narrow the slips and then pull it off. If the module is attached below the dashboard, you can use a tool to loosen it and then slide it free.
